How to have a successful interview
The interview is an opportunity for the company to asses your skills and experience, in line with their requirements for their specific vacancy. It is worth remembering that often the interviewer will be looking for you to provide specific examples, this needs preparation time, to consider the types of questions you expect to be asked and how you can best convey your experience and its relevance to the position that you have applied for:
First Impression:
- Wear only smart business dress.
- Be early for the interview.
- Remember your interview starts from the moment you arrive on the premises. Be pleasant and polite to everyone that you meet, this includes other potential candidates.
- Ensure you have a copy of your CV with you, even if one has already been supplied.
- Always ask for the person who is to interview you by their name.
During the interview:
- Make eye contact, shake hands firmly and smile.
- Relax; this is your opportunity to shine.
- Make sure that you can talk easily about your career history to date, highlight achievements and try to link them to how they will help you in the position that you are applying for.
- Listen to the question and make sure you answer it.
- Don’t use jargon from previous roles, this will isolate the interview.
- Ask relevant questions.
- Let them know that you want the job.
- Before you get up to leave the interview, ask the interviewer if they have any reservations concerning your ability to do the job.
- If the interviewer has reservations, handle them as best you can, be honest.
- Always remember to ask for the job or at least what the next stage is.
